Possible spoilers, but no specifics. (If you know what kind of book you're getting into there are no surprises.)Every marriage at one point goes through some degree of roommate syndrome. (That's the totally technical term and not at all something I just made up.) Two people who truly love each other forget the need or forget how to express the love they have for each other. The apathy can be so sneaky that it is difficult to recognize before it reaches critical point. Overcoming that communication gap, which has often lead to mostly unintentionally hurtful actions, is so vital, but so tricky. This book so beautifully highlights this process. The hurt, the love, the forgiveness and the redemption. It highlights one of the things I think Peel does so well in all her books, she writes pain so realistically but without wallowing. Because of that skill the contrasting joy is felt even deeper. This skill is what makes Peel one of my favorite authors. It's short, but worth it. I loved it.
This is a standalone read with a HEA. I loved this story and could hardly put it down. The two main characters have been best friends for years. She has had a serious crush on him for years but he seems to keep her in the sister zone. They go their separate ways for college, etc. But they are still there for each other keeping In touch through Skype when on different continents and by phone when in the same country. Their relationship is strong and not much comes between them.He marries the wrong woman for him. His best friend can't stand her and let's him know how she feels. In fact, most of his friends and family tells him the wrong girl will be at the altar with him. He marries her anyway and then finds out that she was the wrong choice. She is killed in a car wreck and leaves him with their small daughter. A child that neither really wanted. He calls him best friend for help with the child. She puts her life on hold to help him until she comes to understand that he will never love her as she loves him and she decides to get on with her life.At this point the story really gets interesting. I really, really liked it. It is interesting to see how these two are going to deal with all the problems that they will soon be facing. One reviewer thought the heroine just desperately wanted to find love. I disagree, she wanted the man she loved to love her. I can imagine there are a lot of couples just like this one. Very best friends until one day one realizes that it is more than friendship they want to share. And if that person doesn't love you that way, it can be the thing that really pulls you down. Communication was a big issue with this couple. Not just talking to each other but really communicating their thoughts and feelings. Assuming things can really make a mess of an issue. It is a good read and I definitely recommend it. It is a short read but there was a lot covered in a short period of time. It was complete.I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this writer. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.
This book, well, wow, it just completely sucked me in, tore at my heart, wrapped around it and left me cheering for these two best friends. Christopher and Jaime have been best friends since the moment they met. Sometimes it takes life and experiences and ups and downs to show us what we need(or want/desire-although those all could be synonimis), whether that is right in front of us or something we have to go to great lengths to get.Jaime and Chris have many of those experiences that takes them years to discover, or admit to, what they have needed and wanted all along. Yet to get to that point, it takes everything they have and coming way too close to losing it all, that finally gives them a wake up call.Oh my heart. Honestly, it just, oh. Can you tell I'm trying to find words to describe it? I really just loved it. It is an emotional read. You feel the ache that Jaime carries with her and has for years and then you feel joy and hope and such excitement for great things to come, only to be torn apart and left saying "what just happened?" Then you are left reading and dissecting the whole process and the little bits and pieces that added and pulled away from the whole story and relationship of Christopher and Jaime. Who they are, who they were, why they chose what they chose at many different moments in their lives. The consequences of those choices, both the good, the bad, the ugly, the heartbreaking ones, the beautiful, the healing and the ultimate culmination of all choices and consequences.I have had this on my shelf wanting to read it for quite a while and I kept trying to sneak it in my list of reading books but held off because I didn't know if I was ready for it. I wanted to read it and loved the reviews of friends for it yet lurking underneath I knew it would be an emotional read that I would need to be fully ready for. It was and I was finally ready. I didn't want it to end, I didn't want to be pulled out of the story and I definitely wanted to pick up the next book in the series right away. Unfortunately it will have to wait just a little longer. But I will say that Beck had me laughing throughout this book and I just loved him, he was such a great friend and the perfect support and encouragement that Jaime needed. I cannot wait to read his story in the next book. Yay!I would say this is a book for a more mature reader due to some of the content. I would say it's a clean read but some of the subject matter I wouldn't recommend for younger readers as it deals with a married couple struggling with their relationship as well as mention of sex. Nothing graphic or degrading but done very tastefully. There were a couple swear words but very mild. This is labeled as a novella but it did not feel like one at all. I felt like the characters and their situation and backstory and emotions and everything contained within was developed very well leaving you very fulfilled with the overall aspect of the writing, story and characters. I have recently discovered Jennifer Peel and have LOVED every book I've read so far. I have a couple more that I've grabbed of hers that I will be squishing into my reading pile soon...and definitely Beck and Call, the next book in the series.Happy Reading!!!
Can't say how much I LOVE this book. As soon as I finished this book I opened it back up and re-read it. The characters are so well developed. I love the pull on your heart strings that Jennifer uses, and the happy ending that every great story should have.
