About the Author
Dr. Richard T. Hughes is a Distinguished Professor of Religion and the Director of the Center for Faith and Learning at Pepperdine University. Having earned his B.A. in Bible from Harding University ('65), he went on to earn his M.A. in History of Christianity from ACU in 1967. He holds a Ph.D. in History of Christianity from the University of Iowa (1972). Dr. Hughes was selected by the student body of Pepperdine University as the 'Faculty Person of the Year' for the 1992-1993 school term. He has published over a dozen books on history and the Church. He and his wife Jan live in Malibu, California and are members of the University Church of Christ.

This book contains a detailed and accurate historical account of the history of Churches of Christ. It may lead the reader to realize that Churches of Christ are not the only churches who have sought to restore true discipleship. The book will also recount the efforts of other denominations to follow God in a pure and authentic way and compare their beliefs to those in Churches of Christ. It is also interesting to read the various beliefs that have been held at various points in Churches of Christ and see how different views unfortunately led to denominational splits. I highly recommend reading this book!

Interesting book.
landmark book
I guess I expected more information about the churches of Christ and less information about other religions. It traces the history along side other religions without letting the reader know much of why the church of Christ operates the way they do. It is interesting to know the reason why all religions do what they do including churches of Christ. I think it is sad that we follow Alexander Campbell's likes rather than what the Bible says. As Alexander Campbell chose to accept things his way even though they are in the Bible and some other things he did not agree with why the churches of Christ do things certain way. Tradition rather than the word of GOD stands out in this book and I wish it did not.
This book goes into depth and uncovers the whole process one goes through to "Discover Our Roots". It is a book I highly recommend to anyone interested in restoration history.
