Excellent book. The only one you’ll need. Extremely thorough and and organized in a way that is very user friendly. I purchased Lonely Planet, Fodor’s and DK Italy giides and this book far surpassed them.
As usual, what is covered is very well done.Unfortunately, no coverage of Sicily or the east coast of Italy below Venice.
At first the book was really daunting, with all of the sections and loads of information. If you start from the beginning though, it is really do-able. He has an easy "key" in the very front cover of how important certain sites are and how expensive/inexpensive restaurants are. The book is divided into sections based on the city in Italy that interest you. For our honey mood, my husband and I are going to Italy for a week and decided we wanted to do self-guided tours. Not that guided tours are not interesting, but they are roughly 100$ a piece, per person, and only cover a couple of sites in each tour. We thought we could save a big amount of money using someone else's itinerary, which is exactly what Rick Steve's book does for you. He has free walking tours, audio guides, best places to eat, sleep, visit, etc. I couldn't have asked for any more information in a travel guide. People say these days everyone is using in internet when they go on a trip, but I wanted someone tangible that I could mark up and take with me to continually review. I would recommend this book to any one who wants to take a trip to somewhere and really doesn't know what sites to see or where to stay. Thanks Rick Steves!
My second Rick Steves Italy book. I loved the '13 issue and learned so much about traveling in Italy and being a knowledgeable traveler instead of a clueless tourist. It was so helpful when I was on my own for over a week. I'm headed back to Italy in June and rereading sections of the new book, especially about cellphones, train travel, hotels, and restaurants. Rick has it all figured out. Cutting the book into sections is a great way to reduce bulk by leaving behind the sections I don't need. My first Italian train ticket was so much more understandable when I compared it to the example in the book! "Keep on traveling!"
I like the details and recommendations for buying tickets and avoiding long lines at the museums, churches, etc. we want to see. We will be traveling to Italy in 2019 and this book has a ton of great information for the cities we will be visiting. There are very detailed maps tp help you navigate to see all the great sites.
The only book you need. This thing is a life saver. That said - When we were in Rome, I had been reading it when casually Rick mentions that almost all of the museums are closed Mondays - This is HUGE information and I really wish it was emphasized early on. We could have moved things around and spent monday in a lazy coastal town and that way had 3 days of sight seeing in Rome. This almost happened to us in Florence too. It was frustrating to see it thrown in as an afterthought, as a casual aside. Also, twice we were warned of massive lines during the time of year we were there (August - Duomo and Vatican Museum) and we walked in without any lines - fortunately we took our chances and did not pay unnecessary premiums to skip (non existent) lines but it was an instance were the information was inaccurate.Also - in Cinque Terre he details all these trails but warns they 'may be closed'. Sure enough, they were definitely closed and had been for years. Maybe he puts it there in case you intend to ignore the closures and walk around and do the trail as it is, but it was a little frustrating to have all this information on things that nobody has been able to do legally for years.Still - we went w a very lose game plan and this book was the thing that kept everything together and cut through a lot of nonsense and grey areas. I won't travel to Europe without a Rick Steves companion guide again.
Pretty helpful guide I used for a recent Rome, Vatican City, Taormina, Sicily, Pompeii, and Naples excursions. Written in typical Rick Steve's simple, straightforward style with honest opinions and warnings about things like pick-pockets and tourist scams to be aware. The litle walking map sketches are useful and put things into perspective logistically. I liked the suggested walking tour routes. Excellent up-to-date info about making transportation connections and getting around between cities in Italy. Good references to web guides supported by this book. Can use to load guided tours into your cell phone. Better in context and format than Fodor's guides. Only downsides are: small fonts and thick, heavy guidebook.
